Category: Triathlon (Middle Distance, 1.9km Swim, 90km Bike, 21km Run)
Event name: Outlaw Holkham Half Triathlon
Event location: Holkham Hall, Norfolk
Terrain:
SWIM – A single loop of the lake within the grounds, the water was very murky around the start, but did clear slightly the further out you got. Along the back straight there was a lot of reeds that you couldn’t avoid and a rather unpleasant smell in the water, but this did clear again just before the water exit.
BIKE – A beautiful and fast bike course, and as you would expect from Norfolk, flat most of the way. There are no major climbs on the single loop ride that consists of a lot of fast flowing roads, very easy to pick up pace and sit at it for long periods of time. The roads are not closed to cars but all major turns and junctions are well marshalled. The loop starts and ends down the long narrow drive that leading into the grounds so over taking here is a little harder, especially on the way back in as it doubles up as a section of the run course.
RUN- Don’t be fooled by thinking ‘Norfolk is flat’, the 3 loop run starts of with a mile and a bit long stretch along the path that has a gradual climb. It may not look like much but after the bike leg you really feel it. Once you have rounded the first bend the rest if the course is fairly flat and switches between on road and off road sections through a wood. There are at least 3 aid stations on the run loop, so you never go far without getting refreshments and support!(If it has been dry road shoes will be fine, but if it has been wet you might ant to consider trail shoes)
Would you say the event was good value for money? This was an amazing event and being priced much lower than the official Ironman events it’s a lot more accessible. A beautiful backdrop for an event with a fantastic atmosphere all day. The event weekend has lots of races for all of the family plus loads of great food, drink and triathlon kit stands to check out. Good choice for a first time triathlete.
What tips would you give to others before they take on this event? You will need to rack your bike on the Saturday, so make sure you allow the whole weekend for this event. The Saturday has lots of other races such as the Future Outlaws race for the children. Over the road from Holkham hall is the beach, its a beautiful beach with a long walk down to the water, definitely head over there if you get the time.
Would you take part in this event again? 100%, this was my first triathlon, Outlaw put on an incredible event and the atmosphere around the event village was great. I am hoping to try out another of their races next year!
